That's what I'm thinking. For one, many versions don't have an engine change. Secondly, I wonder if they look at every possible combination of settings or just the defaults.

I'm not advocating this kind of cheating, of course, but if one were smart about it they would have much more difficulty catching you. E.g. use multiple bots, multiple settings, salt in some intentional errors, play the game by yourself until you get a perceived difficult decision, etc.

I suspect most of these online bot-user cheaters are lazy and do something simple as putting EVERY play into GNU-bg 2-ply.

Think about this: if you could play well enough to average 3.5 ER, would you have a positive expectation? The greedy ones who want 1.x ER's just flash the warning light.
