Containment checker play

I've been studying the "containment" chapter of Woolsey's Backgammon Encyclopedia and have been playing with GNU to try to understand the checker play as well as the cube action. The part that I find trickiest is that the play that brings the most checkers to bear on a critical point is often also the play that leaves the most indirect shots. I don't understand this tradeoff very well. Are there any rules of thumb here? For a concrete example, see the somewhat contrived position below. Can one reason one's way to the right play?
Assume money play with Jacoby.
