And another calcutta idea

Not a calcutta, exactly.

The Gamses Venner tournaments in Denmark had 64 players. They were divided into 16 groups of four, each four being Players A, B, C and D, where in the second round the winner of A:B met the winner of C:D.

Anyone could buy tickets for any group in 100 kr. increments. So no one person owned a group (unless only one bought tickets for that group) and the payoff (for a group with a player that finished in the money) was divided among the ticket holders according to the proportion of tickets bought.
