Defending against a super-agressive player

This came up again this weekend against a Chicago area player who learned BG in the 70's and then dropped out for a few decades, resurfacing in Novi. (Not quite that extreme, but it sounds better.)

Is there a way to change your checkerplay against someone who slots liberally, hits every shot, and tries to blitz you off the planet with the fallback of a backgame?

I know one thing you must be sharp on against these players is your cube handling. (As if you don't need that against other style players....) Not only do you need to know your doubling points against backgames but also against failed blitzes. But I'm wondering if you should alter your checkerplay, possibly splitting less than normal to avoid getting blitzed, although this could lead to getting primed....
