I don't know your personal situation and background, but definitely the USA is the wrong country to live on social security. The level of political support (and support in the general population) for social security in the USA is much weaker than in other Western countries, so it could well take big hits especially when the government finances are what they are right now.

I think best to get a job (might be difficult I know), or establish your own company, perhaps together with other people in a like situation. I suspect there would be government financing available to support such a new start-up.
