Note: Letter BETA in Old greek was pronounced like english B (beta), but during early middle ages letter beta changed its pronounciation to english V , so letter beta came to being pronounced now as VITA (veeta) in modern greek. Letter ETA is now pronounced as I (english ee) - this is the process called itacism, similar what happened to english language in the Vowel Shift period, and this is the reason modern english vowels are pronounced differently then in all other languages.
