Interesting. That's not really inconsistent with my theory; the reason why a good player might like the rule might differ from the stated reason for introducing the rule and from the reason the rule is widely accepted. I doubt that if Jacoby had proposed his rule by saying, "Let's introduce this rule so that my opponents will cube too early," I don't think he would have won too many disciples.
Personally, I like the rule for many reasons and I would even like to see it applied in Match play...in fact, I can see no good reason why it shouldn't be used in match play. Of course it will change much of the strategy and even the entire match equity at various scores, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
The main argument against it is that it complicates the game for no good reason other than to complicate the game. We might as well introduce a rule that says that if you roll 51 three times in a game then you have to re-roll the third time, plus your opponent must re-roll the next time they roll 62, unless it's the third game of the match and one player has at least 4 points to go, in which case it's the fourth 51 that must be re-rolled and the opponent must re-roll the next time they roll 43. I'm sure you'd be strongly in favor of a side event with this rule in place.
