In Response To: ruling regarding touching checkers (Art Grater)

Art, again, we are in complete disagreement, or at least misunderstanding.

I will address each of your points:

1. I DO NOT ADVOCATE changing the basic rules of the game. The more extensive rules and guidelines are for serious tournament players in tournaments only. It will have no affect on the beginning or casual players.

2. New players will never see these extensive rules.

3. We are NOT talking about baring players...we are hoping to prevent getting to that point by reducing disputes. As for the "joy" of listening to people argue at a tournament, most of us find that very distracting and a real negative and another of our goals is to prevent that from happening.

4. Of course there will not be 100% agreement by tournament directors...there is not that now, but tournament directors do not generally go around making their own rulings that are contradictory to the rules...they generally make decisions where the rules don't cover the situation adequately, or if they believe there are circumstances that require that they override the rules. That power of the directors will, and should always be there. Having more definitive rules will make it EASIER for the tournament director to rule in a fashion that will cause the least amount of distress, because the director will be able to show the players, in writing, why the other player was not allowed to move the checkers, or why he couldn't touch the doubling cube without actually doubling, or why the players much finish the match and play to the specified score. Again, the goal is to make everything clearly, reduce conflicts, make sure everyone knows what their responsibilities are, and make it easier for the tournament director to enforce the rules.

5. The sheer weight of having such extensive rules will not be a burden, as we are not changing the rules of the game, but simply clarifying them and defining them better, and no one need read these clarifications unless there is a dispute or a question about the application of a rule.

Art, I know you are an extremely intelligent person, and a kind person. I find it difficult to understand why you, as a player, would not want to see fewer misunderstandings, less conflict, less hard feelings when you play in a tournament. If you get into a dispute with an opponent who says you did something improper, would you rather want a decision about your behavior left up to the whim of a tournament director, or would you rather see a written rule that says whether or not you have behaved improperly or broken a rule? Wouldn't you rather know in advance what you are allowed to do and what you are not allowed to do? And the same for your opponent? I am truly surprised it is taking so much argument and discussion to convince you that good, clear rules are better than unclear, ambiguous rules.
