Differences in Elo don't affect independence.

Lack of independence means something like this: You play like a giant after losing your first match, but you play like a donkey if you win your first match. Then you might consider "throwing" your first match since then you'll have excellent chances of winning two out of two of your remaining matches, whereas if you win your first match you are very likely to lose your remaining two matches.
