I think that they do in fact discourage new fans of baseball. Try and explain to someone how basketball or soccer work. A couple minutes gives the basic idea. Now try that for baseball.

Plop the full rules of basketball, soccer, or baseball in front of ANY newbie to that sport, and it will be intimidating.

The basic nature of baseball is just slightly more complex than those other sports. No need to worry about the more complicated stuff.

Runners on first and third, one out. Batter hits a fly ball to the outfield, which is caught (2nd out). Runner on third tags up and scores. The runner on first did not know where the ball was, and has long since rounded second. The outfielder's throw goes to first base to retire the runner for leaving early. This happened after the runner from third crossed home. Does the run count?

Runners on first and third, two out. Batter gets a base hit and the runner from third scores. The runner on first goes to third, but misses second base. The fielding team appeals, and the runner is called out on appeal. Does the run count?
