Perhaps what Jason meant to suggest is that there may be certain crucial information that is obtainable from the first match only by playing in a way that decreases the probability of winning the first match. For example, maybe I have the opportunity in the first match to offer a premature double in order to determine whether my opponent is quick to drop.
