ruling regarding touching checkers

Earlier this month I met with 9 girls age 7 through 11 that knew NOTHING about backgammon. It was the start of a 4-day backgammon boot camp. I explained the basic rules of the game, showed them how the checkers moved, and gave them each a little card showing them the opening position so they could set up the board. It took less than 15 minutes to explain the object of the game and the basic rules, I answered a few questions, and the girls began playing.
I admit that it took at least another 15 minutes going around the room to remind them what direction to go and that you don't count the bar when you are counting your moves, etc., but virtually all of them had a pretty full understanding of the rules in about a half hour.
On the forth day many of the parents and grandparents showed up to watch the kids play and to learn. It took twice as long to teach the rules to the parents.
What does all of this have to do with whether or not we have more definitive and clear rules for tournament play? Good question!
