Right. I said something similar elsewhere. Your scenario is a weak form of my donkey/grandmaster comment. At some risk of losing the first match, you gain in strength in the second match.

This should be carefully distinguished from your original suggestion of a difference in Elo. What matters is not the difference in playing strength between the two players, but the difference in playing strength across matches.
