With similar thoughts even a little as a few years ago, I'd often take a tough looking cube usually when anchored vs unknown and suspected weaker players very early in a typical 11 pt ABT match to see how they bring it home. ie..I might something as bad as a 1.05 pass.

I'd also cube them into a long complex game to see how they play it. ie..if it was .65 to cube and .70 to wait, I might cube them into their likely backgame to see if they can play it well.

Nowadays most Open players are better and I have stopped this practice in general, although I still sometimes do it online.
