'As Bob said, unequal strength is irrelevant; what matters is that something can happen in the first match that can affect the performance in the other match.'

Since something happening in the first match that could affect the results of the latter matches is much more likely with players of unequal strength, it is relevant.

As Neil pointed out, he employed this strategy within a single match in the past, sacrificing a small amount of equity in an early game to find out something about an unknown opponent. But, as he noted, this was not something he would do against a strong opponent. Apparently, unequal strength was relevant to him when deciding the effectiveness of such a strategy.
