As Stick hinted, the problem may be that you're not trying aggressively enough for an advanced anchor early on in the game. Here's one article that may help you figure out when to split in the early game.

After you get better at splitting and making an advanced anchor (which will help you avert the problem you stated, of having one straggler stranded), you'll also need to develop the skill of breaking anchor at the appropriate time. This article by Kit Woolsey should help with that.
