We've slipped a little in the race. Our timing is questionable (which is always the case with the 18-point holding game unless you're significantly behind in the race). Giving up the midpoint is now a major consideration.

Keeping the midpoint messes up the board structure. That does it for me. As far as keeping just one on the midpoint, such a play almost always favors opponent. S/he is given the option of hitting or not, and will (errr, should) only do so when it's to his/her advantage. For the player leaving the blot it's a tie/lose. Of course as always there are exceptions (e.g. when opp is stripped/inflexible +...) but this doesn't look like one of them.
