Daily Quiz 8/6

Problem 1 (or is it 3b?) Running out is doubly defensive, with slightly different meanings. The checker on the 16-point provides some (defensive) coverage of both outfields should White bring his loner out. Getting off the 23-point is 'defensive' in the sense that it gets off a spot where it can be pointed upon in opp's homeboard.

13/8 definitely puts a builder in better position. The downside is that the accompanying deuce is a new blot. Yes, it's not a direct shot (yet). Blots on both sides of the board, particularly when outboarded, is a warning flag.

I'm going to default to the "try and keep the checker back that is already back" rather than "position yourself to catch the escaped checker".

13/8, 13/11

Problem 2 With only two landing spots for the checkers 6-away from the anchor, this looks like a clear take. So what are the market losers? {55, 44, 33, 41} and maybe 22. (I'm not 100% sure that 41 is an MM, but if it's not it has to be really close.) I'll wait.

Problem 3 OK, I would have doubled before this roll since there are some 'forced' market losers {62, 61, 54} along with the previous doublets. Throw in 53. Now 22 is a for sure MM although 41 for sure isn't anymore. 11 probably isn't but it players better than last turn, IMO.

But this isn't a cube question. :) Paying now isn't a clear winner when missed and opp's position is neither improving nor deteriorating. Pay later.

6/1, 4/2

Problem 4 Again, paying now and getting missed doesn't leave Blue home free, and White's position is still as solid as can be. What's the worst that can happen if you wait? You leave a (single blot) direct shot. I'm still paying later.

6/1, 6/4

Problem 5 Blue has position. Race is even. Blue has threats. Only one back and the board isn't made, so I take. I count six rolls that both cover the 3-point and hit the second blot. 62 appears to be Blue's only blank. Looks to me like a solid double.
