This is interesting, particularly in light of 1970's purity and how far one would go in that direction. The super pure play is to make the 4-point. I don't know if any top players would have done that back then but I'm sure some of the groupies would have.

21/11 tries to convert to a race (with a race lead) but pays off to eight hit+cover numbers. When White can't hit he has some rolls which consolidate his position.

2*(2) is quite impure, but keeps opp off balance when he'd really like the freedom to play the entire roll at his choosing. That seems like the modern play to me.
