Question about error rate competitions

In Response To: Question about error rate competitions (Timothy Chow)

I can imagine a situation where I need a certain score in the current match to have a realist shot at winning the event, and where winning the current match now won't do it. The only hope then would be to play on, and hope that my opponent got some very lucky rolls but played badly so that I could rack up a lot of MWC before winning.

Less clearly but probably more commonly, against a player who seems not so good it might be sensible to sacrifice a little equity to prolong the match in the hopes of rolling badly.
