That was never a good rule of thumb. What is true is that a potential blitz increases with the number of checkers that can be used for the attack. 8 is not that much. But to determine the game plan, you also need to look at what points are made. A made acepoint means that you are not going to prime, but race and attack. So: stay back as far as possible, and don't open new targets, while improving your structure.
