The key term here is long run. I don't believe that a single tournament is enough for the long run to average out. Leonardo is right that in the short run, VR-reduced results are bot-dependent.

MWC-based tournaments have the advantage of being much less noisy, just as VR-reduced tournaments are much less noisy than actual results.

In any case, my question wasn't about VR tournaments. That's a separate and interesting question, but not what I asked. Can anyone say "thread-jacking"?
