I wouldn't be surprised if the average age for the Danish bridge players is 70+. In my club it must be 80+ (or so it feels). Last year 6 members of my bridge club died during the season. I bet this is why the substitute list is so long.
In my opinion there are multible reasons why DBGF has lost members during the last years.
At the end of the day these reasons boil down to perceived value for money. If members think there is sufficient value for money in a DBGF membership, they will stay. If not they will stop being members.
In the western part of Denmark there are hardly any tournaments and the team competition is dying out. Hence, extremely little value in a DBGF membership. All you get from a membership is the right to participate in tournaments and appear on the rating list. (you should get 4 magazines per year but noone bothers to write articles or edit the magazine so the magazines are far between). Not much value in the right to enter tournaments if there aren't any.
