In Response To: 52S-44B-41?- 31P- 42P-43L-51D-32R-42?-55K (If you can't nactate it, don't play it!) (Kevin Whyte)

I made five changes to your Nactation in the header, though three of them are really just points of discussion. (Only two of the five are answers to your question marks.) I'll diagram each for clarity.

You (as Blue) played 22/21 13/9. This situation is similar to opening 41 played 24/23 13/9. Moving a back checker with one number anywhere on the far side (whether breaking an anchor, making an anchor, lifting onto or moving off of a point, or scooting a blot, entering, or whatever) and coming down with the other number is categorized as an S (Split) or Z (reverse split) play.

22/21 13/9 in this position is either S or Z, just as opening 41 played 24/23 13/9 is either S or Z. As only the 4 (not the 1) can be played down, you may use S (convenience clause), even though 4 is the larger number, and indeed S (rather than Z) is the common way to describe the play.

24/23 13/9 would be nactated with a lower case s (or z).

White played 20/16*/13, which you nactated with L, and that works well enough. L means to Lift a blot. As there is no blot in the position, White must create a blot she can lift, and while there are other ways to do that, 20/16*/13 honors the hit-most-6 rule. [Or you can apply assumption: it's the obviously best way to create a liftable blot.]

It seems simpler to me to use R. It's trivial to see there is only one Running play. Again, either R or L works here.

You played bar/24 13/8. Your Nactation of D is fine, and some people prefer it. Basically, bar/24 is forced and you're nactating the unforced part of the play.

The logic behind my choice of S (or Z) here is the same as that of opening 51S (or your 41S played from the first diagram of this post). A checker is moved on the far side, and another checker comes down. I use S because this move resembles other moves of the same category and because I like to nactate entire plays rather than partial plays when possible, but whether to use S (or Z) or D (or even T or 8) is really a matter of personal preference.

You played 24/22 8/4 here. There is only one way to move a back checker and Cross the bar (from outer board to inner board) with the other number. See the tutorial, diagrams #13, 18 and 18a.

White played 9/4*(2) 8/3*(2), and you nactated it K. That works both by technical rules and by assumption, so it's okay. However, there are other K-family plays (just as there were other L-family plays but only one R-family play a couple of diagrams back).

There is only one J-family play, which is to "Jump" all four of White's checkers from her outer board to her inner board. [I apologize that the current tutorial has an outdated definition of J. If you prefer to use K for now, I understand. :)]

I'm glad you overrode the spell-checker and typed "nactate" in your header. OTOH, you want to milk all you can out of your plays, so I suppose "lactate" is also appropriate.
