I was right in saying you knew a lot more about this than I do. :)

One thing (mentioned last time this topic came up): before getting onto I-90 at Janesville, look at the traffic movement on the overpass. If it looks slow, you can stay on US-14 all the way. That is my preferred route, regardless (I have relatives in Janesville who I visit). The drive is shorter (distancewise) and only goes through a couple small towns. You get to the Madison beltway further East than does I-90 which *could* mean less traffic on that end (if rush hour there, for instance).
