I think that the current time settings in use give elite players more of an advantage than they already enjoy in unclocked matches....

An interesting hypothesis, and one which would need the full scientific method completion before I'd give it much concern. Prior to clocks, were the weak players primarily the ones slowing down the tournament flow? Were the 'elite' players playing the fastest? A lot of questions but not many answers, just speculation.
