In Response To: Nomenclature: Please, no "touch move" (Tom Keith)

Many people have different opinions on this. My opinion is that we clearly need a rule that, as much as possible, eliminates the potential for people to intentionally or unintentionally putting checkers back in the wrong place after moving them to see what the move would look like.

There are some that believe that once they are moved, they should never be moved back. Others, like myself, would favor a rule that says that if you move a checker that you "might" put back, you should keep that checker apart from other checkers on the point you move to, or away from the edge of the board, so at least there is no question of what checker was moved. Further, if a person does move a checker and does not keep it separated, then he cannot move it back.

I also favor a rule which states that if there is a question between the players as to what was the original position, UNLESS THERE IS GOOD REASON TO RULE OTHERWISE, any ruling should go against the player who moved the checkers. It should be his responsibility to make it very clear which checkers are moved, and when he puts them back, it should be done slowly and carefully so as not to confuse his opponent or cause his opponent to question the move.
