dice probabilities and shot counting

One useful pattern to recognize for entering or for direct hits is the sequence 11-9-7-5-3-1 = 36. Easy to remember because it is just the sequence of odd numbers.
Counting down, like for entries, the number always reduces by two because you eliminate repetitions -- e.g., there are 11 sixes but only 9 additional fives because you've already counted 5-6 with the sixes. If you are entering a single checker against a 5 point board you have 11 entry numbers, against a 4 point board you have 20 entry numbers, etc.
Similarly, for direct hits the same sequence applies plus you must add combinations (including applicable doublets) not already accounted for. If you have a single six shot behind a five prime you have 11 hitting numbers. If you have an open six shot with a single checker you have the 11 sixes plus 2-2, 3-3, 2-4, and 1-5 for 17 hitting numbers. If you have an open five or six shot w/ two checkers you have the 20 (11+9) numbers plus 2-2, 3-3, 2-3, 2-4, and 1-4, for 28 hitting numbers. Going up the scale the number always increases by 2 because of combinations.
Whether you're counting up or counting down -- remember the 11-9-7-5-3-1 sequence.
