In Response To: Tournament Format and Prize Sharing By Dr. Garal (Daniel Murphy)

Dear BG-fans,

sorry for late comments, but I have no possibility to answer because my password was not correct. Stick has helped - thank you very much.

First of all thank you very much to everybody who read the article published on Phil's web-site.

Second, I am a little bit confused, because it looks like nobody has really understood what I'd like to propose and I haven't found and read any critical comments in connection with any of my suggestions. I see only some emotions of some people that nothing to do with ideas I want to present.

May be the place of discussing is wrong - I don't know.

I try to repeat my proposals in short way once more with some extra remarks why I do that.

1. My idea - Backgammon should be introduce in Olympic Intellectual Games like chess, bridge, go and drafts done. 2. To achieve this goal we should promote the tournaments with such conditions that show that the best players are normally in the top and there are very few place for any random results. Only between the best top players. 3. What should be change in the tournament conditions to realize p.2

A lot of course. But... I have propose the first step in this direction - format of BG-tournament, that supposedly allow us to find the best players on each tournament and besides that give the possibility for players play more matches and for tournament organizers make this event very short and fix with time. 1. I propose to make tournmanet with two parts: preliminary tournament and final and consolation sessions. Is this proposal not OK? If "not", please, your arguments - no emotions. Concrete what is wrong? 2. I think that the best 8 players should be the best top players, if they play as minimum 5 matches with 6-8 games in each like money games. If "not", why are they the best? 3. I suppose that after preliminary tournament the best 8 should play usual double elimination system for fixed 3 money places and the rest of tournament participants DE in consolation tournament with two prize places. What is wrong in this proposal?

I assume that these 8 players will be the best on each BG tournament. Or we can suppose that from 32 best players 8 will be all the time in any tournament at the top. Is it bad for Backgammon?

Idea that a lot of points in match will be eliminate some luck and the best player win is NOT work. Why? Look who is the World Champions and their opponents in final and semifinals. And what happens with World Championship last year - the tournament is goind to its dead finish: each year minus 20-30 players. Why? New generation of BG-players don't want to play 23 or 25 points matches. It is too long and bring NOTHING!!!! We should make the tournaments very fast, modern and more attractive.

Has anybody another proposals instead of mine? We can discuss. But now, please, answer on my questions with your concrete arguments, if you have any...

I am looking for your comments!
