Rules or Etiquette

As a formal matter, if someone makes an illegal move the original position should probably be reset so they can make a legal play.
In practice, this does not always happen in chouette play. For example, if you are racing your checkers around the board to save a gammon and accidentally steal a pip, I may just slide your checker back one pip to where it should have landed legally.
That said, people need to act in good faith. If the captain makes an illegal play, it is poor sportsmanship for the box to suggest an inferior legal move in hopes that his suggestion may be accepted. By the same token, if the captain chose an inferior legal move of his own free will, it is poor sportsmanship for a player on the outside to try and encourage him to find the superior play by asking for the position to be reset. From your description, I'm not sure who is actually guilty of poor sportsmanship in your story, if anyone.
