Yes, duck-bump sounded a bit like hypergammon.

I had started with 4.5 year-old "student" (that is now 6 year old). We first played Eureika (but with spare checkers on 6,5,4), and now she wants to play what we call "a race", known as Blast Off, and she often ask "But when we're going to play REAL backgammon?"

I think it is important for her to see that she's been playing on REAL board where REAL backgammon is played by us adults. By playing on the same board, she feels important and older.

I would recommend these two variants (Eureika and Blast Off) as a good start, as games are short and easy.
