Ethical Quandary

I have to agree as well, for all I know the accusations are being pushed by a grieving family who wants someone to pay, and the police when they believe there has been a homicide often go looking at the spouse as a possible "person of interest". A year and a half later and there are still no charges. It's not even like the person has been charged and is out on bail (and to me that still wouldn't matter).
I'm not saying though that if you are potentially suspected of something that there might be places where a conflict of interest may arise from it. If you are on the board of an organization as a Treasurer and the allegations are that you engaged in Fraud then I think it would be prudent to remove that conflict until the matter is sufficiently settled (charges dropped, result of trial, enough time without charges being made).
I do not believe that an "event" should bar a person from entering just because of allegations like this, just to appease those who might enter and have some opinion on the matter from gut feel. If individuals wish to not play, then that is their decision (no matter the reason).
I think it would have been better to withdraw from the event for "personal reasons" and leave it at that. By giving the reason then I'm now unsure whether you intend to influence the event organizers to bar the other person and to spread the idea that you believe they are guilty and that they should think it too.
I walk away from this thread though thinking "It seems someone here wants people to know that they believe the person is guilty and they are trying to get more people on their side - because the more people that believe in something, the more truthful it becomes".
