In Response To: Ethical Quandary (adambulldog)

When I first saw this thread I was torn as to whether to delete it entirely, to leave it and ignore it myself, or whether to leave it and reply. I held off replying for as long as I could. Now I want to reply to a few replies though too so... First, to your original post.

Uxoricide. This is in my opinion the highlight of this post. I had no idea what the word meant and now I do. At least I learned something.

I'm with Daniel in that if everyone knows who you're talking about there is no reason you should dance around it. From what I gather is that you withdrew from a tournament but were bothered beyond what you felt was justified as to why you withdrew and you ended up breaking down and saying it was because you'd be playing Rod. That's your decision to make. If you want to pull out of any tournament for any reason (that isn't some sort of collusion etc...) I think it's your right to do so. I've stated this before in the past because of the calcutta but if I ever felt like quitting a tournament right in the middle of it because there was a He-Man marathon on I just couldn't miss or I had the irrepressible urge do paint my nails that day that's my business. Whether or not you share your reasons for withdrawing is entirely up to you.

Michael Petch "There might be rapists and murderers among your opponents and they just haven't been caught. How do you know who you are really playing against?

You don't. What might be important however is that once you do know how do you react to it.

Michael Petch "I am surprised that if you have an "ethical problem" of this nature with a player that it is only when it comes to playing against them. If you really believed in what you were saying you would not play in any event where they were playing - period. "

I disagree. For example, my feelings on the Alex Lehman/Peter Jes Thomsen online bot scandal are known and Peter's name was brought up in Denmark v. The World and another similar event that was being discussed. I told those in charge of organizing the event if he played I was out and I'd make it clear to all those involved why I was pulling out of the tournament.

However, I'm not going to not enter or pull out of any random event where one or both of them are involved. I think one or both of them may have been in the draw the last time I was in Monte Carlo but I certainly wasn't going to protest in the same fashion. Even if I drew one of them I wouldn't withdraw from the tournament, to me that's ridiculous. That's punishing myself and rewarding them with a bye. Would I prefer it TDs grew a pair and barred certain players? Definitely. But I know realistically I'm not going to win a battle of "if you let player A enter then I am not attending your event" when that event is a regular open tournament. If it's something special like DK v. the World I think that's a battle I can win.

Michael Petch "Do you ask people for their criminal record before allowing them in an event? What about someone who committed murder, served 25 years, and did their time and is a productive citizen now? "

Again, of course not. You're going over the top. We don't need to actively seek out the low down on every person we might face in a tournament but if it is brought to our attention then shouldn't we deal with it? I don't see ignoring it as an option. Your example of someone committing murder and serving their time is fine for a court of law, that doesn't buy them my forgiveness. After what amount of time would you allow someone who was once caught red handed cheating in a tournament to enter your tournaments? Say he was a dice mechanic, caught with loaded dice, and admitted to it.

This could have been an interesting discussion if it wasn't based on a real life event. I tried to omit discussing Rod's situation because I don't think there's anything new to add and there's just no money in it.
