I use murder because that was the context of this thread. However I did point out that depending on context an allegation might produce a situation where there would be a conflict. And you pretty much sum it up. What does it matter that a an ex-murderer who has paid the price (or an alleged murderer) have to do with playing Backgammon - especially if it is online (That would reduce any threat someone might feel).
Someone who has cheated at backgammon in my opinion is a far worse situation than someone who has a murder allegation hanging over them. A person who has been a dice mechanic and who has cheated in my opinion should be dealt with at the "Tournament Director"/"Director" level (who may also be a part of a broader organization). If players have an objection to a TD's choice then they can vote with their feet and walk away.
Fortunately my personal experience with psychopathic wife killers (people I associated with) is limited to just one case and that was Hans Reiser.
