Ethical Quandary

You are the first to note the irony that the policy of "enter the tournament, but withdraw if you have to play the person you dislike" actually rewards that person by giving them a free win. Someday I aspire to be so unpopular that all of my opponents will pay their entry fee and then withdraw.

Once upon a time in the Chicago chouette, someone pulled a knife on me for volunteering the pip count. (Yes, really.) Naturally, I did not play with this person any more, but to my mild surprise he continued to be welcomed into the chouette and most people continued playing with him. I told one of my good friends that I felt it was a little unsupportive for him to continue playing with this person after knowing what he did. "I know, Steve," he said to me, "but honestly he's a bad player and I need the money." Well, I can respect that.
