Yes, that's certainly an option, although Justin notes that the pair was caught "very near the end of their match." In the years I directed the Danish Mixed Doubles, I did the next round's draw after about 95-100 minutes of play. So over the course of the weekend, a handful of players who had not yet finished had to finish during their next free time (which they were usually able to do before all players had completed the next round). We were on a tight schedule, with 11 unclocked 9-point matches in two days. We couldn't possibly have waited before all matches were completed before doing pairings for the next round.

It is and was made extremely clear in the Vietor Cup that it is clock mandatory and run on a tight schedule. However, with this being a friendly event and the staff apparently asleep ...

So it seems the pair escapes with a warning. That's ok with me. But I can't help thinking what the penalty would have been in a chess tournament. Forfeiture? Or expulsion?
