One has to ask (and hopefully answer) the question of where should we draw the line at where TD responsibility ends and where player responsibility begins? Is it simply after 11 years of mandatory clock usage, at least a handful of which were attended by both players in question? Is it after posting the clocks mandatory policy on the website? Is it after distributing the same info via email to each and every player, along with the link to the website? Is it after dwelling on it for a good minute in my opening remarks, which was 100% attended? Is it after a general shout-out seconds after the draw was announced reminding players to “grab a clock” and where to find them?
On the subject of the "casual nature of this event", does this mean rules and rulings, and what constitutes fairness, should somehow be relaxed for all, or certain, participants? Regardless of where the event was held, whether it was an open or invitational event, or any history that may preceed it, the entry fee was $300, which I think most will agree makes such an event more than just "casual", and therefore should not arbitrarily lessen the severity of a similar ruling in an event held under less "casual" conditions (like an open with less history not held at someone's house).
