Nouns and verbs treated differently?

I don't know if this is a grammar/etc. rule, but it sounds better to me to NOT contract a verb with an adverb if you're using the combo as a verb. (But prefer the contraction if used as a noun). Example:
bear off is the verb+adverb: I bear off two checkers.
bearoff is the noun: I have begun the bearoff.
Having said that, I already see a potential exception to my rule:
I won a backgammon. vs. I backgammoned my opponent. But here the word 'back' is not a verb to begin with (in this context) so maybe it's another independent rule that applies.
