Just some questions for better understanding:

1. How do you set the OBJECTIVES?

E.g. in case 1 you have an (effective) lead of 3.1 but you set the objective to 4.6 (and then search a way to find the 'missing' 1.5, if I understand the approach correctly).

Yes!

But from where do you get the 4.6? And, if you take it from an example EPC position of a rollout database, then the shortcut you are searching for would apply for that particular position or not? But you search for a shortcut 'that achieves the desired pip adjustment regardless of the position'?

There are 4 race variables

(1) Leaders wastage, (2) Trailers wastage,(3) Adjusted PC (i.e. wastage added to actual PC) and (4) equal wastage i.e. both sides have the same wastage.

Determining the "missing N pips will depend on the values of each variable.

2. In case 2 you say: 12.5-7.9 + 3.4/2 = 4 pips

My result for this line would be 4.6 + 1.7 = 6.3, how do you get 4?

No confusion intended: 4.6+3.4 = 8/2 = 4

And, if you want to come from 3.4 to 4.0, wouldn't you search for the diff. of 0.6 somehow (like you do in case 1 and 3).

There is a specific procedure for whichever of the variables is the GREATER!!

This approach to the problem yields consistent and accurate results. Downside: its a little messy.
