I actually think this sounds quite a bit worse than your original description - although I still don't think it's right to assume A was trying to mislead. This version very much makes it sound like the winner gets cash AND a seat in the finals. Not sure why people think that's an implausible reading, either, since it's perfectly normal for a tournament qualifier to give you entry + spending money.

If A can't understand how B could possibly be misled by what A said, he needs to work a little harder at putting himself in the other guy's shoes.
