Imagine I enroll in a master tournament like the IIBGF GrandMaster. I am happy to play rated matches against those top players. However, let's say one of those has never played on GridGammon before. Well, I wouldn't want to play a rated match against, let's say, Mochy if he has a rating of 1500 and 0 experience.

I don't believe that would be fair, as the rating formula will obviously screw up, and I believe it would be my right to play the match unrated.

This is an extreme case, and drawing a line is obviously difficult. Simplest solution is just to let rated matches to be preferred but not mandatory.
