At first, I thought to play 13/7*/2, hoping not to be hit. But on reflection, the resulting position does not bode well for our next turn. Of course, before we get another turn, White will have 2s and 6s to hit, and 1s and 6s to cover. I think this is the weakest of alternatives.

Making the three point must be better. That's a play that grabs an asset. As a bonus, it is safer than 11/7*/2. White can hit only with 2s and indirect 8s. The downside is that this play does not hit, and White is free to make either bar point (or both) next time.

Hitting from the midpoint, and bringing two checkers down, seems to be the only other choice. It perfectly duplicates White's hit and cover numbers: White can do either with 1s and 6s. The price here is the loss of the midpoint. In exchange, however, Blue gets a balanced, fluid structure. Unlike the position after 11/7*/2, it is easy to see how Blue can improve next time.

Abandoning the anchor seems too loose. White could hit with 2s, 3s, 4s and 6s, while his 1s would cover on the bar point. This game still has a long way to go, and giving up the anchor now does not lead to any sort of immediate chance for victory. After botching the 44 last turn, we were lucky to get the anchor. Let's not make the same mistake twice!

My vote: 13/8, 13/7*

Mike
