How is that relevant?
As a position develops from a nice to a flat position with very little low pt wastage, you can quickly weigh how much to add and how much to subtract very quickly.
If you take a closed board with no spares and multiplied the wastage for the 6pt 4.2 * 2 checkers, 5pt 4.3 * 2 checkers etc you would have a total of 63.2 pips. Subtract the actual pip count i.e. 63-42 and then divide by 2 you would get 10.5. With a little tweaking this could be a flawless method. Adjusting for gaps is a serious challenge!!
The gaps are good and not bad?
I could have used a nice position with 7 pips as the point of reference and added for gaps in that fashion. Gaps in nice positions are less harmful compared to flat positions. The gap on the ace-pt in a wedge position is worth 0.5 pips; in a flat position the gap is worth 2 pips. The topic of gaps in general is far more complex; in short the literature is thin.
