Here are my solutions to the Pop Quiz offerred by Nack.
Mike
51$-32
Diagram 1A 161
51$-32 167 Position ID: 0PPgATDgc/ABMA Match ID: cAkNAAAAAAAA
Diagram 1B — $ (Slot) 161
51$-32$ 162 Position ID: yHPiATDQ8+ABMA Match ID: MAEAAAAAAAAA
Diagram 1C — % (Alternate slot) 161
51$-32% 162 Position ID: 0GfkATDQ8+ABMA Match ID: MAEAAAAAAAAA
Diagram 1A shows the position before Blue has moved. Diagrams 1B and 1C, respectively, are the nactations of $ (Slot) = 13/10 6/4 and % (Alternate slot) = 13/11 8/5.
To see why, let's begin by enumerating the Slot Rules:
- Slot 5pt or 4pt
- Most Points
- Unstack the taller point
- Order of preference for slotted point: 5pt, 4pt, then 7pt, 3pt, 2pt, 1pt
In addition to these, Nack confirms in this post that there is an unstated 5th rule, namely to apply the 6pt convention if it is needed after rule 4.
Of all the possible slotting plays in Diagram 1A, the only ones that satisfy Rule 1 are the ones shown in Diagrams 1B and 1C. They are the only ones that slot either the 4pt or the 5pt. These two plays, therefore, will rank highest in the slot family. Because Rule 1 does not establish a preference for either, we must examine the other rules to determine precedence.
Rule 2 is irrelevant, because neither candidate makes (or breaks) a point.
Rule 3 is the decider. The play that unstacks the tallest point, in this case the 6pt, ranks higher than the alternative. No other rules need be examined.
52D-43D-32
Diagram 2A 160
52D-43D-32 160 Position ID: 4HPFATDg88gBMA Match ID: cAkNAAAAAAAA
Diagram 2B — $ (Slot) 160
52D-43D-32$ 155 Position ID: 0OeYATDgc8UBMA Match ID: MAEAAAAAAAAA
Diagram 2C — % (Alternate slot) 160
52D-43D-32% 155 Position ID: yPOUATDgc8UBMA Match ID: MAEAAAAAAAAA
Diagram 2A shows the position before Blue has moved. Diagrams 2B and 2C, respectively, are the nactations of $ (Slot) = 13/11 8/5 and % (Alternate slot) = 13/10 6/4. Note that the rankings of the two plays are just the reverse of the ranks they have in Diagram 1.
Once again, Diagrams 2B and 2C are the only two slotting plays that satisfy Rule 1.
Rule 2 decides which of them ranks the highest. By the Most Points Convention, the play that makes the 11pt outranks the alternative.
