The ethics of the OLM

Guess I gotta weigh in. This thread didn't get much traffic. Not sure what that means.

Before I go on, even though I manage the OLM, I don't consider to have any ownership in this. It's like open source software.

However, I do have a vision in mind. The purpose here is to try to learn something. While you should absolutely read what other people have written, you're going to learn better by giving your opinions completely unfettered by others.

Everybody has a different way they want to play in the OLM... I can't really police it, other than to say to me, the right way to participate in the OLM is to vote, and give your reasoning without reading any other response. If I were (a) less lazy and (b) had some better web programming skills, we'd have something similar to what happens on Kit's site. You'd submit your votes and commentary blind. We're only doing it this way because (c) I'm lazy and (d) I don't have mad web programming skills.

Anybody who thinks they can read what others have written and not have that affect their thinking and their vote is kidding themselves.

Furthermore, by writing commentary that is tainted by reading other people's commentary, you are depriving the community of your own fresh look on the problem. If 10 people shout "Next" but it's because it was mob psychology, it's less interesting than if we all shouted "Next" independently.

This OLM is not a consulting chouette. In a CC, there's give and take, people propose moves, give their ideas, and you go back and forth when deciding on difficult moves. That just doesn't really happen here. It could, but it doesn't.

So as the guy who collects the votes, I'll say what I've said before: while I suppose you can do what you want, I'd ask you to please make your vote and write your commentary prior to reading any other post.
