Well, typically when you have to size up opponents, the data you might have could be a rating, their ER avg. or some other "indication" of their strength. So it would be natural to call two players with similar data available "equally strong".

In a lot of cases, you wouldn't know which player you should otherwise refer to as "better". I mean, what's the antonym for "equally strong"?

I agree with you Tim, but I just hear this term SO often in DBgF, carrying the other meaning (eg. same rating, etc.). Said about players where one is not significantly stronger than the other.
