in the US, some employees receive a wage (salary or hourly compensation) from the business owner that assumes the worker will receive tips
True. The federal minimum cash wage for "tipped employees" is $2.13/hour. Employers are allowed to credit a maximum of $5.12/hour in tips against the basic minimum wage rate of $7.25/hour. Although all but 14 states individually mandate a minimum cash wage for tipped employees higher than $2.13 per hour, in only 8 states is the minimum wage the same for both nontipped and tipped employees.
Where are you, Chuck -- Indiana? Yours is a $2.13/hour state. Tip well ;-
