For various reasons (pride, mainly) I never complained when stiffed

You are highlighting my point with your word choice. ('stiffed') Even then you expected to be tipped even though from what the magical internet tells me you were making above minimum wage for that year. It shouldn't be expected for delivering pizza imnsho - driving a cab is a different animal of course.
