In Response To: Tipping etiquette... (Casper van der Tak)

Casper, my experience in Europe is limited, but in general the service sucked compared with the US. Asian service isn't all that great in most places, but depending upon where you are it can be very good. For instance in Thailand you may or may not get what you ordered, and it may or may not come the same day, but it comes with a smile. In Hong Kong you sometimes run into the most surly waiters on the planet. In Korea (it has been awhile, so I hear things have changed) you could get good service once you learned that it was proper to scream "Auntie" at full volume every time you needed something.

If you want great service, from people who truly take pride in their work, no matter what the work might be, go to Japan. (And for the most part, not only is tipping not expected, they will hand the money back.) (Of course when they charge four hundred dollars, my dinner bill last week at Sushi Mizutani, they don't need the tip.)
