Please note that I said "if Morton was somewhat stronger than his opp, he may have been better off playing safe".

The key word in my statement is "may". This is a lot different than if I'd said something like "probably would" or "would" then I'd being implying that I think that Morton's play is incorrect. However, that is not what I stated.

You make a good point that the weaker opp can also make his share of errors from the 8-7 score.

As for adding noise to GNU here, I think that may make it too weak and honestly I think most decent humans can play better than XG 1 ply from here so the question is...does Morton's skill factor advantage overcome what is likely a .015 difference in favor of his play (based on some errors for his opp after hitting?). Well probably not..so it does seem to me that Morton's play was correct.
